FirstGenerationCollegeStudents.org is a non-profit organization founded by Kris Harvey.

A first-generation college graduate from a rural midwestern town, Kris earned a B.A. from Purdue University (graduated Phi Beta Kappa) and an M.B.A. from Georgetown University

Kris has been passionate for years about helping other first-generation and low-income students successfully navigate higher education. She has written for the magazine of the American School Counselor Association. Click here to read her 2004 article and here to read her2007 article.

 In addition, Kris has founded other non-profits that serve(d) FGLI students, including   CollegeKnowledge.org. She previously worked for The College Board on its CollegeEd
 program,  which is designed for first-generation and low-income students.

Meet the Founder

Kris has presented at and/or attended many conferences with information for or about FGLI students. They include: 

Kris is a member of the FGLI Consortium. She also serves on the Student Life Advisory Council (S.L.A.C.) for Purdue University, and is a co-founder of its chapter of Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha), a national honor society for first-generation college students.

 

Kris, her husband, and their golden retriever split their time between their homes in San Diego and New York City. In their spare time, they love to travel. So far, they’ve been to all 50 states, and more than 50 foreign countries.

FGLI students can be time-consuming, overwhelming, and frustrating because no one has put it all in one place. Until now.  FGLIstudents.org is the destination where you can find information about everything from financial aid to self care. And lots more in between. Precious is a sophomore at Purdue University. They are majoring in Applied Statistics, and Computer and Information Technology with a minor in Management. After graduation, they plan to become a Software Developer or Data Analyst.

Jorge is a freshman at Purdue University. He is studying Computer Engineering. After graduation, he plans to become a Software Engineer. Jorge loves skiing and is a part of Purdue FlaC-sat, a team with the objective of designing a satellite for the Air Force.

Meet Our Fellow

Sabryna is a recent first-gen graduate of Purdue University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Web Programming and Design, with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Sabryna is now our new fellow she has come on as our web designer and social media manager. She is passionate about the digital world and loves being able to bring a brand's vision to life through stunning visuals and engaging content. She hopes to make a difference in the lives of other first-gen students as she continues to work for FGLIstudents.org.
